I WASHED my TUFTED RUG 💦 || SPOILER : it completely fell apart 😭
Can you wash a tufted rug? I finally washed, yes WASHED my tufted test rugs to find out! A while ago I tested Bond AAT1132, Roberts 3095 and Elmers Glue-All on Primary Backing Fabric, Monk's Cloth and Burlap. I sorted these test rugs by glue and placed each set of tufted swatches in their own laundry bag (the best decision I could have made!) so that I could easily see which ones held up and which ones didn't. I washed them on a regular cold wash cycle with a little detergent and I let them air dry noting if there were any further changes between them damp and dry.
The end results were an adventure to say the least. It was pretty clear just looking at the laundry bags as I pulled them out of the washing machine that some of the adhesive and backing fabrics had held up better than others.
Bond AAT1132 held up the best of all the three adhesives. There were almost no changes to it other than some cracking but I'm concerned any repeated washing would not hold up and the adhesive would eventually fail. It also held the backings themselves together the best with very little fraying on burlap and monks cloth and none whatsoever on primary backing fabric.
Roberts 3095 was a mess of half melted adhesive that left the laundry bag and my hands sticky with a gross yellow film. While it held up on the monks cloth and primary backing fabric it was unable to hold the burlap together at all and this swatch fell apart the most.
Elmers Glue-All went missing and hasn't been seen since. This was expected but I'm still surprised by how cleanly it washed out. The swatches felt like they had never been glued at all and it showed. There was significant loss of yarn and breakdown of all the backing fabrics with burlap suffering from the wash process the most.
So, can you wash your tufted rugs? I would NOT. Even though Bond did the best I'm still concerned it would eventually fall apart given all the cracking it did just from one wash. It might be ok with rare cleanings using one of those handheld steam vacs but I wouldnt do much more than that and even then only if it had gotten extremely soiled. Otherwise I would stick to blotting up any spills immediately and then lightly using a damp cloth if necessary.
If you were unsure of how your rug had been backed I would definitely err on the side of caution and avoid anything that would soak your rug. These are handmade works of art that should be treated as such!

Backing GLUE for RUG TUFTING Review | BOND vs ROBERTS vs ELMERS
Переглядів 59 тис.2 роки тому
What backing glue do you use now that you've finished your new rug?! The top three options for backing glue are Bond AAT 1132 Custom Rug Compound, Roberts 3095 Carpet Adhesive and good old Elmers Glue. Having used all three of these products I can confidently say they all work, the glue you choose really comes down to what finish you want on your rugs. I reviewed each glue based on three criter...
RUG TUFTING Backing FABRIC Review | Primary Backing Fabric vs Monks Cloth vs Burlap
Переглядів 162 тис.2 роки тому
What is the best cloth for tufting? This week it's time for the Battle of the Tufting Cloth! I compared the top 3 options for tufting cloth that I've seen people use which are Primary Backing Fabric, Monks Cloth and Burlap. Each material was judged on four criteria - PRICE, AVAILABILITY, EASE OF USE (how easy it is to stretch and stay on the frame) and how well it TUFTS (with both the cut pile ...
Building a BIG Rug Tufting Frame! | Sam Made That
Переглядів 35 тис.3 роки тому
It's time to make a BIG RUG TUFTING FRAME! I have a lot of big tufting projects coming up and my smaller tufting frames just aren't going to cut it. So this week I finally built a bigger tufting frame. I ended up building a frame that would allow me to make pieces up to 5ftx6ft. I might go even bigger in the future but I wanted to be realistic about the amount of tufting cloth I would actually ...
How I BACK my WALL RUGS | 3 Ways to Finish Your Tufted Wall Hanging
Переглядів 59 тис.3 роки тому
I love making rugs and wall rugs are my favorite. Here are three of my favorite ways to finish a wall rug - soft-backed, hard-backed and framed! Soft-backed wall rugs are probably the first way most people learn to finish a rug. This technique simply uses a felt or fabric backing to cover the back of the rug with a d-ring or loop to hang it from. Because this is soft and can lay flat it can als...
How I Made a RUG MIRROR & Why You Need a Mini TUFTING FRAME! | Sam Made That
Переглядів 23 тис.3 роки тому
This week I'm tufting one of those fancy rug mirrors I keep seeing on TikTok! Aren't they so cool? Rug tufting is such an amazing medium and it's so much fun to see the different things you can make with it! The best thing about this is that I was able to make this rug mirror using a scrap of primary backing cloth that wouldnt fit on my larger frames by using my MINIATURE TUFTING FRAME! Isn't i...

This week I did a whole lot of tufting for my very first pop up shop! I've been rug tufting for almost a year now but my inventory was pretty low which means I had to crank out alot of new pieces in a very short amount of time, basically 2 days! In two days I made- 8 small wall rugs 1 large wall rug 4 tufted mirrors and 9 popsockets! That's two days to tuft, glue, back, finish and trim everythi...

Did you precast the monks cloth, which can shrink the cloth & make it tighter (maybe less able to lose up)?

Just watched a person in Instagram design and make a fried egg design carpet. Looks so fun. I`m in!! I recall I used a small hand operated tufting machine which looked like a hand mixer in art class in high school. Burlap was the go to fabric back then.... Regarding the Monk`s Cloth, was it possible you could press more gently and not lose so much tension? And I'm sure you know there are many types and weights of burlap.... Wondering also if Monk's Cloth is better suited for hand tufting or hand hooked rug work. I think my mom used this for all her hand worked projects...

Sew some strapping to the underside edges should hold together much better. Also elmers is made to come out with water easy. We used to use it as the best hairgel for big mohawks back in the day lol. Hot water knocks it out immediately.
